Mount Tamalpais School Science Teacher Toni Brand, PhD

An accomplished scientific researcher and instructor, Toni Brand, PhD, joined the Mount Tamalpais School in Mill Valley, California, as an advisor and seventh and eighth-grade science teacher in 2019. She instructs students in the chemical, physical, and biological sciences. She is a strong believer in the fact that students benefit from hands-on, interactive science lessons and goes to great lengths to design impactful lesson plans. Toni Brand, PhD, manages several additional roles outside of her work at the Mount Tamalpais School. She is authoring a research paper about the advantages of interactive diagram teaching tools, with a focus on supporting students with their scientific questioning and use of scientific vocabulary. She is also producing a podcast.

Toni Brand, PhD, graduated with high honors and distinction from the University of California, Santa Barbara. She continued her education at the University of Wisconsin, Madison, School of Medicine and Public Health’s Department of Human Oncology, earning a doctoral degree in cellular and molecular pathology. She performed extensive cancer cell research during her time as a graduate student, earning awards such as the Cellular and Molecular Pathology Travel Scholarship. She subsequently trained as a postdoctoral fellow in the Department of Otolaryngology, Head and Neck Surgery, at the University of California, San Francisco, during which time she gained further experience as a cancer researcher.
